Print Shop notes:
- The Print Shop would consist of a graphics computer lab, a service counter, open space for arrangement of printing machines, a photo silk screen production area, and a receiving/shipping area.
- The graphics computer lab
- The space would be set up with 30 stations for group instruction or individualized computer graphic work.
- The east wall would serve as the "teaching wall"
- There would be ½ windows on the west wall for vision into the printing production shop.
- There would also be windows on the south wall to allow for visibility into the storage room for student supervision.
- Under the west wall of the lab/classroom, on the shop side, there would be closed cabinet storage.
- The Service Counter
- To create a more realistic, professional environment, there would be a service counter at the entry to the space. This would serve as a location to take specific orders for printing, and would have sufficient layout space to work through specifics of the order. It would be similar to the service counter at a "Kinkos"
- Behind the service counter would be the layout space and storage for orders and pick-ups.
- The general Shop area:
- The general shop area would be set-up with overhead feeds of power and compressed air as required.
- General lighting would provide ample illumination for general viewing and observation.
- The Photo Silk Screen area:
- The Photo Silk Screen area is arranged along the west wall, with the photo-emulsion room at the north end.
- This would actually be a "darkroom" with a light sealing door….not a rotating one, but one with light seals on all sides.
- This would be a room with sufficient space to expose the emulsion covered screens to the high intensity light source.
- There would also be room for storage of emulsion and fabric stock as required.
- Directly to the south of the "darkroom" would be the washout sink, with a high pressure hose. The wall will need to be protected around the sink. This would be similar to a wash-out sink, typically found in a photo dark room, but it would be located in the main space…in the light.
- On to the south of the sink would be storage for the screens and inks, with a production table/counter to the east.
- The "drying" unit would be at the end of the sequence.
- The Instructor’s Office:
- The instructor’s office is located in the southwest corner of the space with vision glass on at least 2 sides of the office for supervision.
- The receiving/storage area:
- The receiving storage area would complete the sequence of spaces in the Printing Shop. The space would be set up to either receive and store paper products, and provide a secure space to set up for pick up of finished printing projects for other schools in the district.
